Birders - new and seasoned - should resolve to learn more in 2001

Animals, humans or avians, are creatures of habit. May our habits in 2001 be good ones. Let’s keep feeding, watering and watching birds. Let’s participate in every effort to preserve habitat.
I plan to start a New Year List this week on New Year’s Day. My list this year got lost in the shuffle of solving plumbing problems. I hope my 2001 list will be carefully kept. Contents of a list depends on where the birder goes, but the list itself depends on the faithfulness of the birder. I expect most of my birding will be done in this area, so no exotic western or tropical birds will be on it. Almost every year an exotic, totally unexpected bird, appears here though. Maybe one will come in 2001.
I have New Year’s Resolutions for new or would-be birders: 1. If you do not now belong to a bird club, join one. 2. Take a birding class.
The first meeting of the year of the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi will be held on the second Tuesday of the month (Jan. 9) at 7 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. Come to find out about the next field trip. It is amazing how much faster you learn with a little help. It is also amazing how much experience birders enjoy helping.
There are other groups in the area that might be more convenient for you. The Main Group Bird Club meets in Sinton, a very active group has recently been formed in Rockport, there is a group in Kingsville. Call a Chamber of Commerce for information. If they don’t know, call me at (854-5557.)
Gene Blacklock, of the Coastal Bays and Estuaries Program, will again teach birding at the Botanical Gardens: The first scheduled series is an Advanced Birding Identification Course which will begin on Jan. 15. The twelve class sessions will be held on Monday evenings, with six field trips on weekends through April. Tuition is $50 for Botanical Garden members and $75 for nonmembers.
The other class, a weekend workshop called "Introduction to Coastal Bend Birds," is the best way I can imagine to get started in birding. Tuition of $19, (or $16 for CBBC members) is a real bargain but must be prepaid by Jan. 17 at the visitor’s center of the Gardens. The workshop will take place on Jan. 20/21, beginning with a lecture on Saturday afternoon, and followed by a field trip Sunday afternoon. Blacklock has started many of the best local birders on their interesting birding lives. For more information, call 852-2100.
Next week I will tell you what I saw on the first day of my New Year List.
