UIL to rule on Castro penalties
Robstown coach cited for use of loaner car

Robstown High School baseball coach Steve Castro will learn about any additional penalties coming his way from the University Interscholastic League at today's State Executive Committee meeting in Austin.
Earlier this month, Castro received a private reprimand from the District 31-4A Executive Committee and was suspended for the first five district ballgames. The penalties stemmed from use of an automobile that Castro does not own.
Section 481 of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules prohibits coaches from accepting more than $300 "over and above the stipend paid by the school district in recognition or of appreciation for coaching, directing or sponsorship of League activities."
The 31-4A committee determined that use of the loaner car exceeded the $300 limit, imposed its penalties and forwarded the matter to the UIL.
Castro and Robstown superintendent Leobardo Cano will attend the hearing, said Robert Cavazos, Robstown's interim athletics director. Cavazos would not comment further about the situation.
"I'm supposed to let everything go through Mr. Cano," Cavazos said.
Cano is out of his office until Thursday and was unavailable for comment. Castro, too, could not be reached on Tuesday. Flour Bluff superintendent Carol Moffett, chairperson of the 31-4A committee, did not return a phone message. Moffett also will attend the meeting at the UIL office at 2 p.m.
Castro, starting his 19th season as the Cotton Pickers' coach, received a public reprimand in May after Robstown had played an ineligible player in all of its 32 games.
That ended a consecutive string of playoff appearances that dated to 1986.
Charles Breithaupt, the UIL's athletics director, had said previously that the reprimand issued in May coupled with the latest infraction is a serious matter in the eyes of committee members.
"Anytime you have a coach currently on probation, or coming off probation or a reprimand, (the committee) has usually looked at that very seriously," Breithaupt said. "Anyone who's been penalized, they look at that very seriously."
Castro's hearing is scheduled to be the first item discussed by the State Executive Commttee.
It also will consider possible penalties against Mansfield boys soccer coach Eric Littlejohn and Carrollton Turner boys basketball coach Andy Steele, as well as discussing alleged improper behavior by fans at a Smyer junior high school basketball game.
Littlejohn was reprimanded and placed on three years probation by the District 8-5A Executive Committee for falsifying records. The UIL will consider two alleged ejections of Steele from games in one week.
