Islanders Oetken, Evans named to all-tourney team

LAS CRUCES, NM - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team placed two players - Shelley Oetken and Katie Evans - onto the all-tournament team at the 26th Annual Troy Cox Classic over the weekend.
Oetken hit .476 during the Islanders' six games of the tournament, including two home runs and four RBI. The sophomore had her best game of the season Saturday night in a 9-6 loss to Baylor, as she went 4 for 5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI.
"Obviously, Shelley came to play this weekend," Islanders coach Natasha Dumoski said. "She led the offense for the three days."
Evans batted .333 in the six games. The freshman opened the tournament with a 3-for-4 effort and a homer in A&M-CC's 7-4 victory over Houston. Evans was also instrumental in the Islanders' 4-2 win over Southern Illinois, going 2 for 4 and driving in one run.
Baylor's Koral King and Joni Miller, Oregon's Alyssa Laux and Lisa Wagner, New Mexico State's Lizette Olivares, Southern Illinois' Haley Viefhaus and Erin Stremsterfer and Houston's Keri Kubala as well as Oetken and Evans formed the all-tournament team. The Tournament MVP was Baylor's Ryan Stukel.
Oetken (.338, 3 HR, 10 RBI) and Evans (.343, 2 HR, 7 RBI) will lead the Islanders into this weekend's Bash by the Bay at Cabaniss Field.
A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-21 on the year, will begin tournament play Friday at 8 am against Loyola of Chicago. Purdue, Louisiana Tech, and UT-Arlington also will participate in the field.
