Skidmore-Tynan’s Grover returning to AP as new athletics director, football coach

From staff reports

ARANSAS PASS - Guy Grover, who led Skidmore-Tynan High School to its first football playoff appearance since 1988, was named the new athletics director and football coach at Aransas Pass Monday night.
Grover succeeds Gary Davenport, under whom he served as an assistant at AP, Carroll and Sinton. Davenport resigned Jan. 18 and was hired as the new AD and football coach at Port Lavaca Calhoun.
A search committee selected five finalists for the opening. The list of names was pared from 11 people who were interviewed for the position and the 78 who had applied.
The seven-member board of trustees picked Grover from the five finalists.
"Both Mr. (Nick) LaBarbera (principal) and I commented to the committee that in all our years of interviews we had not seen a group so highly qualified," said David Borrer, superintendent of the Aransas Pass Independent School District.
Before moving on to Skidmore-Tynan prior to the 2000 football season, Grover served as AP's defensive coordinator from 1994-2000. He also was the Panthers baseball coach, leading the team to its first playoff appearance in 1997.
The Gregory-Portland graduate helped Davenport coach AP to the Class 3A Division II state semifinals in 1998 and Sinton to the 3A semifinals in 1991.
Last season, Skidmore-Tynan compiled a 6-5 record, earning the third playoff berth out of District 32-2A. It was the Bobcats' first postseason appearance since 1988 and their first as a 2A school. The Bobcats were beaten by Refugio in the opening round of the Division II playoffs.
