IceRays fall against Outlaws, 6-3

San Angelo team stifles Corpus Christi's rally attempt in third period

The Outlaws might have been tired Saturday night when they took the ice for the seventh time in 11 days. But if they were, they weren't letting it show. Forty-three seconds into Saturday's battle against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays, the Outlaws grabbed the lead and held on for a much-needed 6-3 win.
"We played with a lot of intensity, which is the way we needed to play against this team," Outlaws coach Barry Smith said. "We came out, set the tone, and the fans were into it. It was good all around for our team."
In a game not lacking for emotion or penalties, the Outlaws dominated throughout and never let the outcome seem in question. San Angelo held the Ice Rays to one goal each period, scoring three apiece in the first and second and relying on defense alone in the third.
"It's just a good feeling," said goaltender Chris Owen, who had 40 saves and one assist for the night. "Everyone was on the same page, and everyone was giving 100 percent. It was a real team effort."We were all having fun on the ice and it showed."
Mario Therrien scored the first Outlaw goal, and minutes later Rob Milliken scored his first as a player for San Angelo, bringing the Outlaw lead to 2-0. Corpus Christi countered with a goal at 9:21, then Aaron Millar widened the gap again to 3-1 about a minute later.
"We got off to a good start, which is key for our team," Owen said. "They got in an early one on me, but I responded with saves at key times for us and we came back and buried them."
The teams spent the second half of the first period racking up six fighting penalties, which ultimately gave the Outlaws an edge.
"Those few skirmishes fired us up," Smith said.
Milliken jump-started the Outlaws' scoring in the second with a goal at 4:52. The Ice Rays attempted to fight back with a score at 8:35, but Jean Blouin and Marty Diamond added goals at 9:36 and 13:08 to keep the Ice Rays down. Blouin also threw in two assists for the night.
The Outlaws had a few missed opportunities in the third, but held the Ice Rays to one goal at 5:56 and pulled out the victory.
