Calallen has the right stuff for state meet
Even without pool, Wildcats send five athletes to swimming, diving contest in Austin
By Matt Young Caller-Times
Most people would think having a pool would pretty much be a necessity for having a decent high school swimming team. Apparently, most people would be wrong.
Calallen High School doesn't have a pool, but that didn't stop the Wildcats from sending five athletes to this weekend's state swimming and diving meet in Austin.
"Considering that this is just our third year swimming and we still don't have a pool, I'd say we're doing pretty well," Calallen swimming and diving coach Kathy Prather said.
Carroll is sending the largest contingent to Austin where it will be competing in 14 different events. The Tigers will be facing an uphill battle however, as they qualified with the slowest time in each event.
Kingsville also has qualifiers in six different events.
Without a pool on campus, Calallen's swimmers and divers drive to the CCISD Natatorium for practice.
"It's pretty much a hassle, but these kids love their sport, so they get in their cars or get a ride and make sure they make it to practice every day," Prather said.
Prather's son Steven is the lone Wildcat to qualify for state in two events - the 100 and 200 freestyle. Prather, who also qualified for state as a sophomore last year, enters the state meet with just the 11th fastest time out of 16 swimmers in both events, but Kathy Prather still thinks he has a good shot at making waves in both events.
"Normally having the 11th fastest time would concern me, but he's proven that he can perform in pressure situations," Kathy Prather said. "Last year at regionals, he dropped two seconds off his best time. Then he dropped two more seconds at the state preliminaries and two more seconds in the state finals. I think he can do really well once he gets there."
Autumn Ware and Jason Cox will both represent Calallen in the 100 breaststroke.
"Autumn and Jason both have an awesome breaststroke," Prather said. "Right now, they both go in with the fifth-fastest qualifying time, so they both have an excellent shot to medal."
Calallen's Jordan Grimes and Waylon Coffey will compete in the boys 1-meter diving event.
