Bethune-Cookman edges out A&M-CC in overtime, 93-92

Wildcats' Lockwood nets errant shot in final seconds against Islanders

From staff reports

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Derricus Lockwood grabbed an errant shot and put it in with two seconds remaining to give Bethune-Cookman a 93-92 overtime win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday at Moore Gym.
The Islanders tried to answer Lockwood's heroics when Michael Hicks threw a baseball inbounds pass downcourt. Shaun Hemsley corralled the pass and found Lee Denmon open on the wing, but Denmon's 3-point attempt missed the mark at the buzzer.
A&M-Corpus Christi (13-14) had trouble containing Bethune-Cookman's explosive duo of Tyree Harris and Lockwood. Harris led the way for the Wildcats with 31 points, while Lockwood chipped in 24 points and nine rebounds.
Hicks led the Islanders with 28 points.
"We were OK on offense, but our defense wasn't very good," said A&M-Corpus Christi coach Ronnie Arrow in a radio interview. "Once again, we had trouble guarding people. Every game we lose, it seems like that same thing is what comes back to haunt us. (Bethune-Cookman) is averaging 67 points per game, and they wind up with 93 points against us."
The real back-breaker was the Islanders' mental breakdowns down the stretch. A Hicks dunk gave A&M-Corpus Christi a 91-85 lead with just 1:17 left in overtime, but after the dunk, Islander guard Sennai Atsbeha was whistled for a technical foul for taunting the crowd.
Bethune-Cookman (8-17) capitalized on that mistake with Harris sinking both free throws. On the ensuing possession, Harris was sent to the line again, where he made them both to cut the lead to 91-89 with 1:02 left.
Hicks converted just one of two free throws on the Islanders' next possession, which Bethune-Cookman answered with two more made free throws to cut the lead to 92-91 with 16 seconds left.
With no choice but to foul, the Wildcats sent Atsbeha to the line with 10 seconds remaining. The Islander guard missed both attempts, setting up Lockwood's game-winning putback.
A&M-Corpus Christi made just three of six free throws in overtime, while Bethune-Cookman made 11 of 12.
Bethune-Cookman also pounded the Islanders on the boards, outrebounding them 51-38. The Wildcats also grabbed 30 offensive rebounds, the most the Islanders have ever surrendered.
A&M-Corpus Christi led for the entire second half until Bethune-Cookman took its first lead with 4:14 left in regulation. The Islanders trailed by three in the final minute, but Atsbeha hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
