IceRays keep streak alive with 3-1 win
Corpus Christi comes back home to face rival IceBats after knocking off Fort Worth
From staff and correspondent reports
FORT WORTH - Corpus Christi ended its six-game road trip with a 3-1 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas Tuesday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The IceRays, who went 4-2 over their 12-day trip, improved to 31-22-3 (65 points) in the Western Professional Hockey League Eastern Division and now hold a five-point lead over Monroe for fourth place in the standings.
The win was Corpus Christi's third in a row and sixth in its last eight games. Corpus Christi hosts Austin (34-18-4), tied for second place in the Eastern Division with 72 points, tonight at Memorial Coliseum. The IceRays defeated the Ice Bats, 2-1, last Sunday in Austin.
Corpus Christi is 3-6-1 against Austin this season, and lost to the Ice Bats, 8-1, the last time the teams met in Memorial Coliseum. Austin has lost three straight games and is 4-6-1 in February.
Layne Roland scored his 13th goal of the season at the 2:54 mark of the first period to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead.
At 6:31 of the second period, Kurt Wickenheiser gave the IceRays a 2-0 lead with his seventh game-winning goal of the year.
Fort Worth would come within one goal of the IceRays at 7:17 of the final period on a goal by Craig Johnson.
Corpus Christi's Jaime Hearn sealed the victory for the IceRays with an empty-net goal with just 35 seconds left to play. Wickenheiser earned his 703rd assist and 1,500th point on the goal.
Goaltender Brad Erbsland made 30 saves to improve to 3-1-0 with the IceRays. Erbsland is playing in place of Eddy Skazyk, who is out with a knee injury sustained last Friday against Eastern Division leading Bossier-Shreveport.
