Islanders take Classic golf title

Host A&M-CC women win tourney behind Newman-Gillespie's 231

From staff and correspondent reports

CORPUS CHRISTI - Melissa Newman-Gillespie (Kamloops, B.C., Canada) fired a final-round 75 to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to the team title at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at the Kings Crossing Golf and Country Club.
Newman-Gillespie, who entered the final round in a tie for sixth, rallied from a four-shot deficit to win her second individual title of the year with a three-round score of 231. The victory marks the second consecutive tournament title for the sophomore. Newman-Gillespie won medalist honors at the Lady Bronc Classic two weeks ago in Mission.
Although her 75 tied for the lowest score of the round, Newman-Gillespie took advantage of the troubles of the second round leaders. A&M-CC's Alessandra Perez (Punta de Mata, Venezuela), who held a two-shot lead heading into the final round, fired an 87 to finish in a tie for 11th. Bradley's Kelly Dillon shot a 93 in the final round, while Lamar's Olaf Maria Jonsdottir withdrew due to injury. Both were tied for second behind Perez.
North Texas's Nina Reis and Chrystal Thayer of Kansas tied for second at 234. Northern Iowa's Karla Schuldt and Jamie Brown of North Texas tied for fourth at 235.
The Islanders also received a solid effort out of Liza Mucheru (Nairobi, Kenya). The sophomore posted a career-best 75 in the third to move into a tie for sixth. Mucheru bested her previous mark of 76, set at the Pat Bradley Invitational on Nov. 13 in Miami, Fla. She started the day in 16th overall.
A&M-CC's lineup was rounded out by Jessica Kinsey (T27th, 246) and Carrie Braun (35th, 251).
A&M-Corpus Christi, which held a three-shot lead at the beginning of the day, posted a final-round 323 to finish in a tie for first with Lamar. However, the Islanders claimed the tiebreaker with the lower fifth-player score. It was A&M-Corpus Christi's second tournament title since beginning the program three years ago. The Islanders won last year's Northwood Hidden Oaks Intercollegiate.
A&M-Corpus Christi's total of 951 shattered the former school record for three-round score of 982 at the Lady Bronc Classic. Lamar finished second with a 951. Bradley jumped up to finish third, while Kansas leaped into fourth after shooting a tournament best 309 in the final round.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to action on March 4-6 at the Centenary Ladies Invitational.
