Teamwork pays off for Sinton in playoffs
Lack of double-digit scorers doesn't hamper Pirates in 59-42 victory over Edna
From staff and correspondent reports
PORT LAVACA - No single Sinton player scored in double figures.
Pirates coach Ed Glendening will take that every time, however, as long as the result was like Monday night.
Sinton broke open a tight game in the third period to cruise past Edna, 59-42 in a Class 3A bi-district playoff game at Port Lavaca.
"All 11 guys played well. We didn't have anyone really stand out," Glendening said. "Everyone scored equal points, got equal steals, everything. It was a team effort."
The Pirates (22-10) spread their scoring evenly throughout their roster, with two players scoring nine points and another eight. But it was on the defensive end where Sinton found success. Trailing 19-18 at halftime, the Pirates outscored Edna 17-8 in the third and 24-15 in the fourth to win.
"We really hurt them with our full-court pressure defense," Glendening said. "We put them under so much pressure that they just ran out of gas in the second half."
The Pirates move on to the area round, where they will face La Feria on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
A RAY 80, LAREDO UNITED 58: In Laredo, Tiger Mitchell scored 31 points and Ray High School cruised past Laredo United in a Class 5A boys bi-district playoff game Monday night.
The victory moves the Texans (23-10) into the area round, where it will face Bronwsville Pace.
Doug Nichols added 16 points for Ray, while Taurean Mitchell and Haskell Hudgens each added 12.
It was a decisive second period - the Texans blew open a 21-13 game by outscoring United 23-9 in the second - that sealed the game. At halftime, the Texans led 44-22.
Joey Sanchez and Juan Osorio each scored 17 points to lead United.
A ALAMO HEIGHTS 71, BEEVILLE 41: Beeville, down by 15 points at halftime, held Alamo Heights to just nine third-period points, but it wasn't nearly enough.
The Trojans scored just 10 in the period themselves, then were outscored 25-9 in the fourth en route to a bi-district loss in the Class 4A boys playoffs Monday.
Ernest Ramos scored 15 points to lead Beeville, which ended its season at 19-11.
A PORT ARANSAS 64, PREMONT 60: Port Aransas survived a tough bi-district matchup Monday with Premont, holding on to win in Mathis.
Zack Holcomb scored 30 points to push Port Aransas into the area round of the Class 2A playoffs, where it will face San Antonio Cole on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Three Rivers.
Matt Fiedler added 11 points for Port Aransas, and Evan Talley had 10. That was just enough to overcome the big night of Premont's Jesse Jannillo, who poured in 28 points, including eight 3-point shots.
A BISHOP 64, PHARR-VALLEY VIEW 43: Brett Rogers scored 15 points and Cody Scheible added 11 to lead Bishop past Pharr-Valley View in a Class 3A bi-district game.
The Badgers (19-10) used strong defense in the first half to forge a 33-15 lead. Valley View was held to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.
