A&M-Corpus Christi’s Detra Johnson (22) goes past Schreiner’s Shandell Sapp during the first half of the Islanders’ 124-58 victory over Schreiner on Monday. Johnson, a senior playing in her final game with the Islanders, scored a school-record 45 points in the victory.
Detra Johnson knows how to put a cap on a career.
In her final game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Johnson put on a show at senior night, exploding for a school-record 45 points in the Islanders' 124-58 demolition of Schreiner College on Monday at Memorial Coliseum.
In an effort to honor the senior in her final game, the Islanders fed Johnson early and often, and she responded.
Johnson made 22 of her 33 shots and poured in 18 points off nine offensive rebounds.
"I got hot and started scoring, and my teammates just kept getting me the ball," Johnson said. "My teammates knew my goal was to score 40 points in a game, and they tried to get me the ball as much as possible. I really appreciated that, because this is a great way to end my career here."
The Islanders' only other senior, Rocky Grayson, also had a big night, posting her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
"I wanted to go out with that double-double real bad," Grayson said. "I've been trying to get it all season, so I was relieved to finally get it in my last game as an Islander."
If A&M-Corpus Christi wanted to showcase its seniors in their final game, it picked the right opponent. Schreiner - a Division III school with just two wins this season - was severely overmatched.
A&M-Corpus Christi made sure to put Schreiner's name all over its record books. Besides Johnson's record-setting performance, the Islanders broke records for margin of victory, points scored in a first half, second half and game. They also broke records for made field goals (55), field-goal attempts (99), field-goal percentage (56 percent), offensive rebounds (25), assists (30) and fewest turnovers (10).
"I think my kids played as hard as they could, but we were obviously overmatched," Schreiner coach Stacey Patsko said. "I'm a little concerned that (A&M-Corpus Christi) pressed us for the entire first half, but maybe they didn't realize just how young and overmatched we were."
A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said she didn't try to run up the score, but wanted her seniors to have fun in their final game.
"In the second half, we decided not to press any more," Estes said. "I didn't want to embarrass anyone, but I wanted it to be a special night for the seniors, and I wanted Detra and Rocky to play as much as possible."
It didn't take long for the game to get out of hand. A&M-Corpus Christi led 25-17 seven minutes into the game and exploded on a 24-3 run to turn the game into a laugher.
Included in that run was a two-minute stretch where Johnson scored 10 straight points. By the end of the first half, A&M-Corpus Christi led 59-29.
