Javs sweep Cameron once more
Softball team now 4-0 after 10-1, 8-0 victories
From staff and correspondent reports
KINGSVILLE - The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team got good pitching and hitting for the second consecutive day as the Javelinas swept another doubleheader from Cameron Sunday afternoon, winning by 10-1 and 8-0 scores.
The Javelinas had taken two from the Lady Aggies Saturday afternoon as they opened their season. Cameron fell to 2-4 with the losses.
The teams, both members of the Lone Star Conference, scheduled the weekend series after the LSC First-Pitch Tournament in Irving was cancelled because of wet grounds. The Javelinas are in the LSC South and Cameron competes in the North.
Maria Gutierrez gave up seven scattered hits and no earned runs as she picked up her second pitching victory in Sunday's opener. She struck out seven and walked two.
The Javelinas scored three times in the first and that proved more than enough for Gutierrez.
Outfielder Tara Turk went 3 for 3 for the Javelinas, and catcher Tracy Guadarrama and first baseman Jennifer Moffett each had two hits.
Javelina shortstop Sarah Norman hit the team's first home run. Third baseman Wendy Wagster and outfielder Michelle Bartch each had doubles for A&M-Kingsville.
In the second game, Amanda Reed pitched a two-hitter for the Javelinas.
Meanwhile, the Javelinas hammered out 13 hits, led by Mariana Casarez with three singles. Center Lesley Zambrano had two hits, and one was a home run. Second baseman Amanda Sustaita, outfielder Tara Turk and Bartch each had two hits.
Turk hit .636 (7-11) in the weekend series and had four RBIs.
The Javelinas will be in San Antonio Tuesday for a doubleheader with St. Mary's. The team won't return home until March 6 when they host South Dakota State.
