Top-seeded Bower blows past Jessup at Futures tournament

Player continues to advance towards finals of USTA event

From staff and correspondent reports

Top-seeded Justin Bower moved a step closer into the finals of the 2001 USTA Futures of Corpus Christi on Friday, but there is a chance he may face a tournament qualifier in Sunday's championship.
Then, if he does, he would have to pair with that same qualifier to try to win a doubles championship together.
Bower eased past No. 7 seed Michael Jessup of the United States in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 to move into today's semifinals, where he will face fourth-seeded Ricardo Mello of Brazil.
Mello defeated fifth-seeded Zack Fleishman of the United States, 7-5, 6-3.
The other semifinal today pits No. 6 Oren Motevassel of Israel against Damien Roberts, who had to qualify last weekend to earn a spot in this week's tournament.
Roberts, from South Africa, defeated the United States' Jack Brasington in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Roberts hasn't lost a set during the entire tournament, the only one of the four singles semifinalists to be able to make such a claim.
In doubles, No. 2 seeds Bower and Roberts - who could face off in Sunday's singles championship - defeated Bobby Kokavec and Motevassel in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to move into Sunday's final, where they will face Canada's Dominic Boulet and the United States' Michael Jessup.
Today's singles semifinals begin at noon at the H-E-B Tennis Center. The Motevassel-Roberts match will be played first, followed by Bower and Mello.
Sunday's singles champonship begins at noon, with the doubles final to follow.
Admission is free to the public.
