Martinez leads Javs in OT win

Guard sets record with 6 3-pointers

From staff and correspondent reports

KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville guard Lorie Martinez made six 3-point goals Thursday night to become the NCAA's all-time leading female 3-point scorer during the Javelinas' 94-83 overtime victory over Tarleton State.
Martinez, a 5-3 senior from Incarnate Word Academy, increased her collegiate career 3-point shots total to 369, breaking the previous record of 368 by Meegan Garrity of Clark (Mass.) from 1994-97.
Earlier in the game, Martinez broke the NCAA's Division II women's record of 365, set by Amy Coon of Clarion (Pa.) in 1991-94.
As a sophomore, Martinez became the Lone Star Conference's career 3-point record holder. She broke the school's all-time mark as a freshman.
Thursday, Martinez broke the NCAA all-time record with 1:50 remaining in overtime. She finished the game six of 10 from 3-point range, and with 23 points.
The Javelinas women, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II and second in the NCAA Division II South Central Region, built a 10-point halftime lead and led throughout the second half up until 15 seconds left in regulation, when the TexAnns pulled even with a 78-78 tie.
A&M-Kingsville (22-4, 9-2 in the LSC South) scored the first 11 points of overtime, however, and held on for the win.
Center Precious Thibodeaux scored 29 points to lead the Javelinas, and also pulled down 12 rebounds. Pat Lewandowski of Ray High School added 26 and 11 rebounds.
The Javelinas close out their home season Saturday when they host Texas Woman's College at 2 p.m.
