Johnson propels Islanders
Transfer's 34 points Helps beat Lamar, 83-59
From staff reports
BEAUMONT - Detra Johnson set one school record that helped the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team set another.
Johnson poured in a school-record 34 points, leading A&M-Corpus Christi to an 83-59 win over Lamar on Monday at Montagne Center. The win was the Islanders' fifth straight, the longest winning streak in the program's short history.
Johnson, who can play guard or forward, did most of her damage inside against the Cardinals. The transfer from Texas Tech got her 34 points without even a 3-point attempt, opting instead to bang away inside, converting 14 of her 23 field-goal attempts. Johnson also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Although Johnson was obviously a difference-maker, A&M-Corpus Christi's defense also played a key role in the win. The Islanders forced the Cardinals into 27 turnovers and committed just 10 themselves.
A&M-Corpus Christi (14-11) took a 34-28 lead at halftime and ran away with the game in the second half. The Islanders shot 20 for 28 (71 percent) in the second half to stretch out the big final margin.
Johnson's big night spoiled a standout performance by Lamar's Shawnta Vanzant, who finished with 23 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.
