Freshman Evans surpasses Isles' season assists mark
By Matt Young Caller-Times
Because Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is just a second-year program, school records aren't that hard to come by. However, that doesn't mean Brian Evans isn't proud of his new season assists record.
Evans' four assists in A&M-Corpus Christi's 92-87 overtime win over Belmont on Monday at Memorial Coliseum gave him 120 assists on the season, surpassing the record of 117 set by Toby Thompson last season.
"It's a new record, but hopefully I can't keep trying to break my own record every year," said Evans, who is just a freshman.
Evans was just three assists away from breaking the record against Texas College, but the point guard only got one assist against the Steers.
"I saw I needed just three more going into that last game, then I got a career-low one assist, so I was kind of upset about that," Evans said. "I knew I'd get the record this time."
A SERIES SHOOTOUT: A&M-Corpus Christi's win was downright low-scoring compared to the three previous games against Belmont.
Going into Monday's game, Belmont led the series, 2-1, and had outscored A&M-Corpus Christi, 293-292, in the three games.
The scoreboard lights up when the two teams meet because both teams light it up from long range. Belmont has hit 38 3-pointers in the three contests, while the Islanders have connected for 35.
A CONFERENCE ENVY: The Islanders beat Belmont, but they have to admit to being at least a little jealous of the Bruins.
Belmont is leaving A&M-Corpus Christi and its independent label behind. Belmont will be joining the Trans America Athletc Conference next season.
With the addition of Belmont, the TAAC will have 11 members. Odd numbers are a headache for conferences to deal with when it comes to scheduling, and A&M-Corpus Christi definitely wouldn't mind bumping that number to an even 12.
