A&M-CC to face surging Lamar team
Isles women hope to repeat against Cardinals
By Matt Young Caller-Times
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team had a fairly easy time disposing of Lamar back in November, but Islander coach Sheryl Estes insists it won't be so easy the second time around.
The Islanders knocked off Lamar 75-67 Nov. 28 at Memorial Coliseum. Since then, the Cardinals have added a couple players and started playing better basketball.
A&M-Corpus Christi (13-11) will get a look at the new-and-improved Cardinals at 7 p.m. today at the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
"Lamar has been playing really good basketball and is doing really well in the Southland Conference," Estes said. "They seem to be playing a lot better than they were early in the season."
Since leaving Corpus Christi with that loss to the Islanders, Lamar (11-10) got off to an 8-2 start in the Southland Conference. However, the Cardinals took another turn for the worst and lost their next four games in a row before bouncing back with a win over McNeese State on Saturday.
Lamar has gotten a boost since leaving Corpus Christi by the return of starting forward Vanessa Dunn and reserve forward Jennifer Dover. Dunn was ineligible at the beginning of the season and Dover is just coming back from an injury that forced her to miss the first half of the season.
"Those players are two nice additions to that team, and additions that we didn't get a chance to see the first time," Estes said. "They're a lot stronger and a lot deeper. They're just a much better overall team since the first time we played them."
Since the Lamar game, A&M-Corpus Christi has experienced an up-and-down season. After dropping two games below .500, A&M-Corpus Christi has tied a program record by going on a four-game winning streak.
"We started off playing pretty well early in the season, but then we got into kind of a lull along the way," Estes said. "We lost some games we shouldn't have, but we've bounced back and put together a winning streak that we're hoping will last through the rest of the season."
A win at Lamar would give A&M-Corpus Christi 14 wins with two games to play and equal the Islanders' win total in their first season.
"After our last loss, we realized we needed to come out and play better and be more consistent," A&M-Corpus Christi center Jean Clark said. "Now, we're just focused on winning out and finishing with a 16-11 record."
