Women wipe out Ladies in 91-51 win
By Matt Young Caller-Times
And the routs just keep on coming.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team cruised to their fourth straight win, blasting Centenary 91-51 Saturday at Memorial Coliseum. The four-game winning streak equals the best in school history, but this streak has been most impressive because the wins have been by an average of more than 28 points per game.
"After our last loss, we just decided that we wanted to come out every game the rest of the way focused and play consistent basketball," said Islander center Jean Clark, who led the way with 16 points against Centenary. "We just want to finish strong and not let up."
With the game never in doubt, plenty of Islanders got a chance to contribute. All but one A&M-Corpus Christi player played at least 13 minutes and all but one player scored. Besides Clark, three other Islanders scored in double figures, including Detra Johnson's 15, and Kristin Rogers and Anna Hartzell with 10 each.
"Everyone got to contribute, and that's what makes these games fun," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "We got to play a lot of players, and they all played well."
A&M-Corpus Christi (13-11) set a school record with 21 steals. Centenary (0-24), which has a 52-game losing streak, helped the Islanders get that record by committing 33 turnovers.
"I thought we played tremendous defense," Estes said. "We had a lot of players jumping out in the passing lanes getting steals and that led to some easy buckets at the other end."
Those steals and easy layups were most evident midway through the second half when the Islanders turned the game into a rout.
A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed and had a double-digit lead for 28 of the game's 40 minutes. Although the lead was always quite comfortable for A&M-Corpus Christi, it buried Centenary with a 26-5 run midway through the second half.
A&M-Corpus Christi led 51-37 with 13:53 remaining, when the Islanders picked up their game on the defensive end. In the next six minutes, A&M-Corpus Christi collected six steals and forced nine turnovers.
Johnson was the beneficiary of a lot of easy baskets in the run, collecting 11 points in the six-minute stretch.
Centenary was overmatched at every position, but the most glaring mismatch was in the paint where the Ladies had no answer for Johnson or Clark.
"We had a big advantage inside, so most of our offense that we ran today was designed to get the ball inside," Clark said. "We were able to get some easy buckets inside, and when they collapsed too much down low, that set up some open shots outside."
