Freshmen get good play in easy win over Centenary
By Matt Young Caller-Times
As the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team laughed its way to a 91-51 rout of Centenary on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum, the Islanders' three freshman got plenty of playing time.
Freshman forward Anna Hartzell finished with 10 points in 15 minutes and point guard ShaKayla Hawkins had a well-rounded game with a career-high eight points, five assists and five rebounds. Center Roberta Plaza also added six points and four rebounds in eight minutes.
"We got to play the freshman a lot, and they showed what they could do," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "ShaKayla Hawkins played a tremendous game, and Anna Hartzell was strong in the post. Roberta didn't get to play as much as those two, but she looked good when she got the ball inside, too."
ALL PASS, NO SHOOT: With the game decided before halftime, every Islander played at least eight minutes and every Islander but one scored.
The one player that didn't score was starting point guard Mandie Vinck, who rarely looks to shoot. Vinck attempted just two shots, the fewest of any Islander.
"Mandie's job isn't to score," Estes said. "She had four assists, and we can always count on her in the assist department. Plus, ShaKayla Hawkins got a lot of playing time, so Mandie spent more time on the sidelines than she's probably used to."
Vinck, who averages 26 minutes per game, played just 15 minutes in the blowout.
For the fourth straight game, Vinck didn't commit a turnover.
FINDING FORSTER: The last time A&M-Corpus Christi and Centenary played, Centenary's Kayla Forster went off for 22 points and nine rebounds. Forster had a 20-point performance against the Islanders last season as well.
This time, A&M-Corpus Christi shut down Forster, holding her to just four points.
