IceRays edge by Fort Worth, 2-1

Bumstead sinks winning goal in shootout to secure victory for CC

From staff and correspondent reports

FORT WORTH - Corpus Christi escaped with a 2-1 shootout win over the Fort Worth Brahmas Saturday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Geoff Bumstead scored the deciding goal on the IceRays' eighth attempt during sudden death. Goaltender Eddy Skazyk gave up a goal to Steve Dowhy on Fort Worth's first attempt, then stopped seven straight shots, the last by Casey Hungle, to preserve the win.
Corpus Christi improved to 28-20-3 (59 points), giving the IceRays a four-point cushion over idle Monroe for fourth place in the Western Professional Hockey League Eastern Division.
The IceRays, who defeated Fort Worth, 4-3, Friday night in Corpus Christi, continue play their second of six straight road games today at 3 p.m. against the Austin Ice Bats.
The only offense either team produced in the first period would have better suited the players in a boxing ring.
Corpus Christi's Cory Evans and Fort Worth's Clint Cabana tangled in the first fight of the night. Cabana, who was taken down by Geoff Bumstead in last Friday night's 3-1 win by the IceRays, stayed toe-to-toe with Evans until both players fell to the ice.
Later in the period, IceRays forward Brad Wingfield caught Fort Worth's Daniel Villeneuve with a few quick punches before knocking down the Brahmas defenseman.
A strong offensive push by Fort Worth midway through the first period kept Skazyk on his toes. While Corpus Christi was struggling to find room to shoot, the Brahmas were busy in the IceRays' zone and tested Skazyk with six shots.
The IceRays' woes on offense continued late into the opening period. With 5:42 left before the first intermission, Corpus Christi had taken just four shots on goal.
Fort Worth's Mark Zacharias was called for slashing at 18:15, giving Corpus Christi the game's first power play. The IceRays took three shots at Laurie in the last minute of the game, but the game remained scoreless when time expired.
There were 54 seconds left on Zacharias' penalty at the start of the second period, which wasn't enough time to set up for an open shot.
Brad Wingfield gave Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead at 6:49 of the second period when he beat Laurie up high from the right side. Kurt Wickenheiser earned his 700th career assist and 27th of the season on the goal.
Fort Worth's Steve Dowhy tied the game, 1-1, at 11:29 when he caught Skazyk off guard with a quick shot off a rebound.
