Islanders returning to homecourt
A&M-CC road wars end as team faces Steers
By Matt Young Caller-Times
No matter how Texas A&M-Corpus Christi coach Ronnie Arrow and his players try to spin it, Texas College is not a big-name opponent.
The Steers, who play the Islanders at 7 p.m. today at Memorial Coliseum, are an NAIA team with an 8-17 record. A&M-Corpus Christi will be just the third Division I team Texas College has played this season.
The last Division I opponent, Birmingham-Southern, routed the Steers 118-58 on Thursday.
So what exactly do the Islanders know about Texas College, a school with an enrollment of 300 students?
"I don't know that much, except that they're real athletic," A&M-Corpus Christi guard Lee Denmon said. "We looked at some film, and we know they like to push the ball, so we're expecting a fast-paced game."
Even though not much is known about the tiny school from Tyler, A&M-Corpus Christi is determined to keep its focus on the Steers.
"We're definitely not going to look past them; we'll be excited to play because it's our first game at home in a while," Denmon said.
The Islanders haven't played at the coliseum since their 107-78 win over Albany on Jan. 15. Since then, A&M-Corpus Christi went 2-4 on its six-game road trip, including finishing with two straight losses at Texas-Pan American and Cleveland State.
"We just plain didn't show up at Pan American," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Ronnie Arrow said. "We weren't ready to play that game and that's why we got beat. We bounced back and played well at Cleveland State, but we didn't get it done down the stretch. It's tough to finish games on the road, so we hope to do better here at home."
The Islanders play three of their last four games at home and will have to win at least three of those games to finish with a .500 record.
"That's why we'll be ready to play against Texas College," Arrow said. "We have to go out and play with all the energy and all the focus that it will take to win our last four games, and that all starts against Texas College.
"If we finish out the year with four straight wins, that will put us above .500, and I think that would be a great year. But we can't do that unless we come out and assert ourselves against Texas College."
