Mashiska Washington, Zach Fleishman and Levar Harper-Griffith are among the top players in the 2001 USTA Futures tournament, which begins today at 10 a.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Center with qualifying matches.
Washington, 26, is making his 2001 debut on the Futures Circuit in Corpus Christi. Last year, he was a semifinalist at USTA Futures events in Little Rock, Ark. and Houston. He is the younger brother of MaliVai Washington, the former U.S. Davis Cup team member and 1996 Wimbledon finalist.
Fleishman, 21, received a wild-card entry into last year's U.S. Open. And Harper-Griffith, 20, was a semifinalist twice in USTA events last year. Last year, then-Davis Cup captain John McEnroe selected Harper-Griffith to be a practice partner for the Davis Cup team that played Zimbabwe.
Matches are scheduled throughout today at the tennis center. The event lasts through Feb. 18.
KINGSVILLE - Three more Texas high school recruits signed national football letters with Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday, giving the Javelinas 26 signees.
Signing Thursday were Steve Lackey, a 6-2, 245-pound center from Waller; Troy Tackitt, a 6-5, 270-pound offensive lineman from Floresville; and Lance Walpole, a 6-1, 205-pound running back from Floresville.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has named Eddie Castillo as its assistant track and field coach, the university announced Thursday.
Castillo, a 1994 graduate of UT-San Antonio, was a four-year letterman for the Roadrunners under current Islanders coach Shawn Flanagan. In college, Castillo earned all-Southland Conference honors ni cross country in 1992, captured the 800- and 1,500-meter conference outdoor titles in 1992 and won the indoor mile title in 1993.
He has been a volunteer assistant for the Islanders' cross country teams for the past year.
"Eddie brings a level of enthusiasm and expertise which will be instrumental in launching the Islander track and field program in 2002," Flanagan said. "He has already started to contact recruits, which we will need to build this program up from scratch."
