Grayson makes return to form against Belmont

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

She had been saddled to the bench with an injury for six games, so Rocky Grayson knew exactly what she wanted to do when she got a chance to return to action.
Grayson returned from a concussion in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 73-63 win over Belmont on Thursday at Memorial Coliseum.
Grayson made her presence felt early by grabbing an offensive rebound - her trademark - on the Islanders first possession after checking into the game.
"I've had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do when I returned," Grayson said. "I knew I wanted to get out there and play Rocky basketball, which is getting every rebound I can and bringing some enthusiasm to the court."
Grayson finished with eight points and six rebounds in 22 minutes of action.
"I thought Rocky had a real solid game for her first game back," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said. "She was flying all over the boards and brought her usual excitement to the game."

  • BIG BLOCK: Jean Clark had the highlight of the game with a monster block.
Belmont center Miranda Jones tried a 10-foot turnaround jumper from the baseline when Clark came flying in for the block. Clark didn't just block the shot, she threw it over the first four rows of seats behind the basket.

  • TURNAROUND: Just three weeks ago, the Islanders were slumping as much as they've slumped all season. Suddenly, they're as hot as they've ever been.
A&M-Corpus Christi had been losers in five of seven and had dropped to 9-11 after a loss at Belmont on Jan. 20.
Since then, the Islanders have won three in a row, including a 36-point win at Centenary and a 27-point win at Sam Houston State.
"There's no doubt that we feel good about the way we're playing," Estes said. "We just want to keep it up for the rest of the season."
