Islanders sit in fourth at golf tourney

MISSION - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Melissa Newman-Gillespie paced the women's golf team to a tie for fourth after Monday's first day action of the Lady Bronc Classic at the Club at Cimmaron.
   Gillespie, a sophomore from Kamloops, British Columbia, fired back-to-back 77s and will begin the third and final round in second place, four shots behind tournament leader Danielle Netschi of SMU. Netschi shot a 150.
   Alessandra Perez (Punta de Mata, Venezuela) is six shots off the pace after registering back to back 79s. The A&M-CC freshman is in a tie for sixth overall.
   Rounding out the Islander lineup was Jessica Kinsey (86-86-170), Liza Mucheru (84-87-171) and Cristina Pelchar (97-93-190).
   A&M-Corpus Christi opened the tournament with a 326 and then followed with a 327 in the second round. The Islanders will begin the final round tied with Oral Roberts in the seven-team field. Both teams are only seven shots behind Lamar for second. SMU took control of the tournament after registering a 628. The Lady Mustangs hold a 19 shot lead over Lamar.
   "It's very windy down here," Islanders coach Ian Freret said. "Again, we posted two good scored then limped our way home. However, we put ourselves in a position for a strong finish. We have room for improvement in the third round."

   Southwest Texas State roars past A&M-Kingsville, 20-7
   SAN MARCOS - An 11-run inning by Southwest Texas wiped out a Texas A&M-Kingsville lead and propelled the Bobcats to a 20-7 victory over the Javelinas Tuesday afternoon.
   The Javelinas, who opened the year with four straight wins, had taken a 7-2 lead in the top of the fourth when SWT erupted for its 11 runs.
   Mike Adams pitched 3ì innings for the Javelinas and gave up five hits and six runs. Five other pitchers took the mound for the Javs, and Mike Cressman was the loser.
   The Javelinas had 11 hits and the first two men in the order got seven of these. Center fielder John Dean, the leadoff hitter, went 4 for 4 with a double. Second baseman B.J. Griffith, second in the lineup, was 3 for 4.
   Ed Rivera also doubled for the Javelinas.
   Southwest Texas improved to 4-0 for the year.
   The Javelinas will be back home this weekend, and for the remainder of February. They host St. Mary's in a single game Friday (6 p.m.) and in a doubleheader Saturday (1 p.m.).

   A&M-Corpus Christi drops softball twin-bill to UTSA
   SAN ANTONIO - Texas-San Antonio scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a come-from-behind 12-8 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. The Roadrunners completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
   Trailing, 8-4, heading into the fifth, UTSA put together eight hits in the seven-run frame. Jennifer Davis provided the big blow for UTSA with a bases-loaded triple to give the Roadrunners a four-run cushion. Ashley Oswald, who opened the scoring in the fifth with a solo homer, was 3 for 4.
   Katie Evans sparked the Islanders' offense. The freshman hit her first collegiate homer, a three-run blast in the fourth. Evans had three of A&M-CC's 10 hits in the game. Shianna Hines followed Evans by belting her second homer of the year.
   "Our pitching has got to improve," Islanders coach Natasha Dumoski said. "We can't keep giving up 12 runs and expect to win."
   Paige Whitley scattered six hits in 5ì innings of work to pace the Roadrunners in the second game. Angela Graham recorded the final five outs to post the save.
   Monica Briggs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first for UTSA with a two-run double. Michelle McElyna and Serena Ornsby each provided run scoring singles in the fourth and sixth innings respectively.
   Hines delivered the Islanders' lone run in the fourth inning with an RBI single, which scored Rachel Kitchens. Kitchens, who was 2 for 3, had half of the Islanders' hits.
   In her first start, sophomore Amanda Burton went the distance for the Islanders, surrendering 13 hits and four runs.
   A&M-Corpus Christi (0-8) will return to action Friday when it hosts the Islander Classic. The Islanders will open the tournament with Mississippi State at 2 p.m. at Cabaniss Field. Other teams participating will be Oregon State, Tennessee and Southwest Texas State.
