Javelinas defeat Torpedoes in twin bill

Higginbotham drives in winning RBI to lead A&M-Kingsville team to win in second game

KINGSVILLE - Freshman catcher Aaron Higginbotham drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the sixth as Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Concordia Lutheran, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader here Sunday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.
   The Javelinas had taken the opener, 9-0.
   The Javs had swept three games from Sul Ross Friday and Saturday. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Brian Shippey reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a single by David Gonzalez.
   Higginbotham got his two-out single to break a 1-1 tie and give the Javelinas their victory margin.
   The Javelinas had scored their earlier run in the bottom of the first and Concordia tied it in the top of the fifth.
   Chris Phillips started for the Javelinas and putched five innings, allowing four hits and one run. Roland Salinas relieved and got the victory. In two innings, he gave up no hits and no runs, and struck out four. Chris Razook relieved Concordia starter Scott Berkman in the fifth and was the loser. The Javelinas had six hits and Gonzalez had two of these. The Tornadoes had four hits, and Razook had a double.
   In the opener, the Javelinas scored nine runs in the first three innings. Four Javelina pitchers held Concordia to two hits.
   Lavelle Morgan started for the Javs and pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed two hits and no runs, and had six strikeouts. Juan Obregon pitched 0.1 innings, Daniel Garcia pitched 1.2 and Justin Parker got the final out of the game. Scott Gordon started for the Tornadoes and pitched 2.1 innings. He was the loser, giving up seven hits and nine runs.
   TAMUK had nine hits, and B.J. Griffith went three for four.
   Gonzalez went two for three. The Javelinas are 5-0 heading into a Tuesday single game with Southwest Texas in San Marcos. The Javs return home next weekend to host St. Mary's in a single game Friday night and a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
   Concordia is 0-4 for the year.
