San Angelo rallies past C.C.

IceRays unable to hold onto lead, take 6-4 loss to Outlaws

San Angelo goalie Sergi Tkachenko deflects IceRay Dustin McArthur’s shot near the end of the first period during Saturday’s game at the Memorial Coliseum.
Taylor Hall saw signs of a potential breakdown last week against Fort Worth.
Saturday night against the San Angelo Outlaws, the Corpus Christi IceRays made Hall's worries a reality.
San Angelo scored four unanswered goals in the third period, three by Jean Blouin, to help rally the Outlaws to a 6-4 win over Corpus Christi at Memorial Coliseum.
Corpus Christi had a 4-2 lead entering the final period, but defensive miscues in the IceRays' zone allowed Blouin to get open shots on goalie Eddy Skazyk. Corri Moffat capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left to play.
"It's just one of those things where you think you have the game won. Unfortunately, the game was not over when we went up, 4-2. There was still 20 minutes to play and we let it slip away from us," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said.
The loss, Corpus Christi's second in a row, drops the IceRays to 25-20-3 (53 points) and keeps them in fifth place in the Western Professional Hockey League Eastern Division behind the idle Monroe Moccasins (54 points).
Despite the win, San Angelo (20-24-5) remains in last place in the Western Division with 45 points. El Paso defeated Lubbock, 5-1, Saturday night to stay ahead of the Outlaws by one point.
A roughing penalty on Corpus Christi's Brad Wingfield six minutes into the first period gave San Angelo its first scoring opportunity.
Wingfield was in the penalty box for 21 seconds when Outlaws forward Mario Thierren flipped the puck over Skazyk, who was falling backward in the crease.
San Angelo's 1-0 lead lasted for almost eight minutes before Alex Kholomeyev's game-tying goal at 13:57 of the opening period.
Less than a minute later, Corpus Christi took a one-goal lead on a goal by forward Kurt Wickenheiser. The Outlaws had a chance to answer Wickenheiser's goal when Wingfield again was sent to the penalty box, this time for hooking.
After having failed on the first penalty kill, the IceRays were able to maintain their 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Stingy defensive play by both teams hampered all scoring attempts. The IceRays and Outlaws each had taken just one shot on goal five minutes into the second period.
The offensive struggles continued for several minutes until the IceRays finally found a break in San Angelo's defense.
Wingfield chased down the puck in front of the IceRays' bench just as he crossed the blue line into the San Angelo zone. Geoff Bumstead, who was trailing along with Cory Evans on the play, took a pass from Wingfield and blasted a shot at Tkachenko.
The puck hit off Tkachenko's leg pads and bounced out toward the blue line straight at Evans. Before Tkachenko could react, Evans had already sent the puck into the net for a 3-1 lead 7:15 into the second period.
San Angelo kept the game close with a goal by Brad Cook midway through the period, bringing the Outlaws to within one goal, 3-2.
Wingfield was called for his third penalty at 14:40 of the second for holding. Half of Wingfield's penalty had expired when Corpus Christi defenseman Jamie Hearn slashed San Angelo's Skeeter Moore.
The slash, which occurred near the left circle in the Corpus Christi zone, sent Moore to his knees and sliding into the boards behind the goal. Hearn's shot on Moore gave the Outlaws a 5-on-3 advantage with less than five minutes left before the second intermission.
Martin LaMarche negated San Angelo's two-man opportunity when he hit Corpus Christi's Shawn Frappier with a high stick to the head. LaMarche was charged with a double minor, which gave the IceRays a man advantage for almost the remainder of the second period.
With 32 seconds left on the power play and 37 seconds on the game clock, Layne Roland scored his 11th goal of the season to give Corpus Christi a 4-2 lead.
