Mister Match-it

Trendy dad swears off Bermuda shorts, swears by colored dress shirts, cuff links

Clayton Lee, 44, says women are attracted to a man who dresses in well-matched colors.
Closet snoop
Clayton Lee, 44, father of three, works as a senior marketing rep for an insurance company. In his spare time, he enjoys shopping, jet skiing, fishing and bird hunting. He's lived most of his life in Texas and Mexico, calling Corpus Christi home since 1999.

   Q: I wouldn't be caught dead in:
A: Bermuda shorts, wingtip shoes and black socks. I tell my wife she has my permission to kill me if she sees me in that combination. Wearing that combination is the easiest way to say 'Old.' Don't do it.

   Q: My wife calls me...
A: ...the Imelda Marcos of men. I also own about 40 shirts and close to 30 pairs of shoes. Most guys have brown and black shoes for weddings and funerals, and they're pretty scuffed. I always have mine polished. I also accessorize with cuff links. Even my French cuffs are monogrammed with my initials.

   Q: What's your fashion motto?
A: Never pay retail price for anything; it's a sin. Part of the fun is getting such a good deal. I know the best places to shop south of San Antonio and love shopping at Stein Mart, Marshalls and Burlington Coat Factory. I also love to shop on the border and in Mexico.

'I also accessorize with cuff links,' Lee says. 'Even my French cuffs are monogrammed with my initials.'

Q: My best fashion steals include...
A: ...a black-print Savile Row wool sports coat made for Macy's that retails for $375. I got it for $7 last year at Burlington Coat Factory in Laredo. And my Oscar De la Renta Italian calfskin lace up shoes that I bought here at Stein Mart for $18. Depending on where you purchase them, you can pay up to $185.

   Q: Most embarrassing fashion mishap:
A: I was once walking in downtown Austin on Congress Avenue in the middle of the huge lunch crowd when I ripped a pair of pants from the inner thigh all the way to the kneecap. I had nowhere to hide and had to walk six blocks enduring a lot of stares and muffled chuckles. They'd flop open every time I walked, and I had no jacket to hide it.

   Q: Fashion advice for men:
A: Please wear something besides a white shirt every day. Clue to young, single men: There is something attractive to women about a man who dresses in well-matched colors.

Q: All men should own ...
A: A blue 100 percent wool blazer, cuff links, a black suit (that's not just for funerals) and a tie that looks like it was made in this century.

Q: How do you solve fashion dilemmas?
A: I've helped mothers find suits for their sons while I was shopping for myself. "I need to pick something out," they say. "Do you mind if I ask you a question?" That's how it gets started. A young guy should find someone who will give him some tips and knows how to dress appropriately for any occasion.
