Texas jury relies on DNA to indict John Doe suspect

Associated Press

FORT WORTH - A 1996 rape suspect remains unknown, but he has been indicted based solely on DNA evidence.
Arlington investigators do not have any suspects in the rape, and the five-year statute of limitations would have expired today With DNA evidence, police sought an indictment to keep the case alive.
The sexual assault indictment handed up Tuesday against the man, identified only as John Doe and case No. 815516, is the first of its kind in Tarrant County.
"It's a great victory," said Chris Lippincott, spokesman for the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault.
The Arlington woman had just returned home from work Aug. 18, 1996, when a masked man pulled her from her car and assaulted her.
