Tex-Mex of the sea
 |
Good news
La Costeñita combines the two foods in which Corpus Christi excels
- Mexican food and seafood. This Leopard Street restaurant stays true to its Mexican
heritage with standard Tex-Mex lunch and dinner plates and seafood cooked Mexican
style.
Bad news
The interior needs a little more attention. Although I liked the
Mexican décor, the floor needed a good sweeping and the smoking section suffered
from too little air conditioning. A floor fan helped cool this section. The bathrooms,
however, smelled like smoke and lacked air conditioning.
Food for thought
I chose the camarones a la Mexicana (shrimp Mexican style), while
my companion opted for the camaron empanizado (breaded shrimp). For good measure,
we ordered the Mexican plate (two cheese enchiladas, tacos, rice and beans). .
The Mexican plate did not disappoint.
The enchiladas were smothered in cheese and chili sauce and the rice
and beans had your standard Tex-Mex taste and texture.
Rice and beans came with all three entrees, along with salads made
from shredded iceberg lettuce and diced tomatoes.
Nothing special in all that. And even the breaded shrimp my companion
ordered didn't offer anything extraordinary, although it tasted just fine. And
you can't beat the price. My companion's order came with eight butterfly shrimp
(along with the rice, beans and salad mentioned previously) cooked to perfection
and covered in a tasty, dark brown batter.
The price? $6.15.
The real treat came from the camarones a la Mexicana. This entrée
alone makes a repeat trip sometime in the future a certainty. The shrimp in this
dish is grilled along with onions, bell peppers and dry red chili peppers. The
grilled vegetables were cooked until just done and retained a bit of crunch.
Large pepper flakes dotted the entire concoction, giving it a spicy,
grilled taste. The shrimp tasted fresh and had a consistency that was neither
too soft nor too tough.
Although we didn't sample the shrimp cocktail, we noticed quite a
few customers were eating the appetizer with gusto. It comes with shrimp, tomato
juice, avocado and pico de gallo (without the peppers).
Service
Our waitress greeted us warmly, helped us make our selections and
offered good advice.
