IceRays sign pair of players

Smith, Prentice defect from the Moccasins

From staff and correspondent reports

The Corpus Christi IceRays added two players to their roster Thursday with signing of defenseman Jason Smith and forward Ryan Prentice, both former Monroe Moccasins.
Smith has played most of his nine seasons in the East Coast Hockey League and Western Professional Hockey League, including the last three in Monroe. He played in all 70 games for Moccasins and finished with 52 points (17 goals, 35 assists), and also earned a spot in the WPHL all-star game.
"Jason is a veteran player that can make things happen," IceRays coach Dale Henry said. "What impresses me the most about him is his ability to always find a way to help the team win. Jason is the type of player that gives his team a chance to win."
Prentice is joining his fourth team in three seasons as a professional. He played in 69 games last season, scoring 17 goals and recording 18 assists.
The Gulf Coast Girls T-Ball All-Star team, made up of 6- and 7-year-old softball players from the Corpus Christi area, won their third title at a national championship in the Shetland division by winning a recent tournament in Burleson.
The team compiled a 14-2 All-Star record, which included victories at the sectional tournament in San Benito, the regional tournament in Castroville and the national tournament in Burleson.
The Sinton Little League Major Girls All-Star team finished as runners-up in the state tournament in Waco this week.
The team, made up of 11- and 12-year-old girls, lost in the state championship game to Waco Midway.
Three area girls fastpitch teams recently competed at the Pony Fastpitch National Tournament in Marion, Ill.
The 16-under Stingrays finished in third place at the tournament, competing against teams from Harrin, Ill., Nashville and San Antonio. The 10-under team and the 12-under team both won their respective age divisions.
TAMPA, Fla. - The Southside Red Stars, a little league all-star team from the Southside Bronco division of the Pony League, won its first game Thursday at the South Zone Championships, being held in Tampa, Fla.
The Red Stars defeated Tampa Forest Hills 10-1, and will next play Tampa Town & Country. The winner of the tournament advances to the Pony League World Series, which will be held in Monterey, Calif.
