Art to the extremes

It's not surprising that Vida Beauford's art runs hot and cold.
Beauford grew up along the frigid waters of Canada's eastern coast,
only later to take up residence in sun-scorched South Texas.
Beauford's oil paintings, which feature amix of warm Coastal Bend
landscapes and icy scenes from Newfoundland, Canada, go on display Saturday at
the Multicultural Center at Heritage Park.
Intense light
"When I was a kid, we would take a boat out to the icebergs, chop
ice from it and make the best ice tea you ever had," said Beauford, 64, of Aransas
Pass. "It's like water you never tasted before - really sweet."
Painting landscapes from opposite ends of the continent is a wonderful
challenge for an artist, Beauford said.
"It's more of an intense light you have here," she said. "It's like
a neon light bulb here, and just a regular old light bulb there."
Experimental work
The city Park and Recreation Department brought Beauford's art to
the Multicultural Center at the suggestion of Corpus Christi artist Pat Crenshaw,
who admires Beauford's experimental work. Instead of using canvass, Beauford sometimes
makes the unconventional move of painting with oils on paper meant for watercolor.
"Everyone thinks it's pretty weird, except it works, and you can't
argue with that," Crenshaw said. "It's bright, and it's alluring."
