Labonte park funds campaign is on

By Samuel Segrist
Caller-Times

A campaign to improve a city park honoring NASCAR champions and Corpus Christi natives Bobby and Terry Labonte began Thursday at City Hall.
"Hundreds of thousands of people hear about Corpus Christi every week, not once, but twice when they are introduced at the races," said Henry Garrett, chairman of the special recognition committee behind the project.
The centerpiece of the project includes a concrete sign - 8 feet high and 16 feet wide - at the park entrance. John Dykema of Bright and Dykemas Architects Inc. said the sign will be prominent on Interstate 37.
The project will also include highway signs promoting the park, which was Nueces River Park until the City Council voted earlier this year to rename it Terry and Bobby Labonte Park.
The park is in the north section of Corpus Christi off of I-37.
The project is entirely privately funded. Debbie Lindsey-Opel, president of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, said organizers need to raise $60,000 to pay for all parts of the project. Donors will be recognized for contributions.
People interested in contributing may send checks to the Chamber of Commerce Recognition Fund, Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 640, Corpus Christi, Texas 78403.
Dedication of the park is scheduled for June 20.
