Area teachers receive award of excellence from Ford
Several local teachers have been selected to receive the Ford Salute to Education Excellence in Education Award.
Honorees include Glenda Locke, George West High School; Ginger Johnson, Rockport-Fulton High School; Bryan Waller, Pettus Junior/Senior High School; Gonzalo Treviño, Hebbronville High School; Joseph Eberhard, Alice High School; Carlos Guerrero, H.M. King High School; Nancy Flores, Ray High School; Marilyn Lawson, Gregory-Portland High School; and Craig Stallard, Taft High School.
The award is given to teachers who have made a significant difference in students' lives. The students themselves nominated their teachers for the award. The teachers were honored Monday during a ceremony at Del Mar College.
Del Mar's Phi Theta Kappa chapter named to Top 100
Phi Theta Kappa recently named Del Mar College's Gamma Sigma Chapter a Top 100 Chapter for a second year in a row, keeping it among the top 2 percent worldwide.
This year, Gamma Sigma Chapter ranked 26 out of 1,300 chapters from around the world.
The Del Mar Phi Theta Kappa chapter also won the Hallmark Award for leadership after competing against 80 chapters in the Texas region.
Tickets go on sale for Hidden Gardens tour
The Aransas County office of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and the Aransas/San Patricio County Master Gardeners will present the Hidden Gardens tour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 5, beginning at Green Acres, 611 E. Mimosa, Rockport.
The tour will feature sites in Rockport, Lamar, Aransas Pass and Ingleside. All landscapes are designed and maintained by the homeowner.
Tickets may be purchased at Green Acres or from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 5 at the Aransas Pass Library, 110 N. Lamont. Cost is $10 per person. All proceeds benefit landscape developments by Master Gardeners at Green Acres.

Fourth annual Poker Run will have Leather, Lace
Al Amin Shrine, Noble Riders will hold its fourth annual Poker Run beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Al Amin Shrine Center, 2001 Suntide Road.
This year the riders will hold a Leather and Lace Run. The Leather Run consists of stops that serve beer and cocktails. The Lace run consists of stops that serve food and ice cream.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the first riders out at 11 a.m. All riders are to be back to the Shrine by 4 p.m. The map of the route will be given to riders at the time of registration.
First prize is $150, second prize is $75 and worst hand is $25. Cost of the run is $10 per bike and $5 for co-riders.
A Chili Cook-Off will also be held, with registration from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Judging by celebrity judges will be at 3 p.m. All contestants must make at least 1 gallon of finished chili that will be available for tasting and testing. The chili contest is open to the public, and trophies will be awarded to the winners.

Nueces County 4-H Fashion Fiesta winners announced
This year's Nueces County 4-H Fashion Fiesta was held April 17 at the Nueces County Memorial Agricultural Center.
The objectives of the 4-H Clothing Program and the Fashion Show are to develop leadership abilities, build character, assume citizenship responsibilities, build self-confidence and poise and acquire knowledge of and develop skills in making or purchasing articles of clothing.
Winners included: Julie Kircher, Sub-Junior Construction Playwear category; Morgan Hipp, Sub-Junior Construction Dressy category; Amy Kircher, Junior Construction Casual category; Katherine Harris, Junior Construction Playwear category; and Breanne Vaughan, Junior Construction Specialty category.
Also, Bethany Jackson, Sub-Junior Consumer Buying Casual; Amy Jo McClendon, Sub-Junior Consumer Buying Dressy; Abby Loessin, Sub-Junior Consumer Buying Playwear; Samantha Greenwood, Sub-Junior Consumer Buying Specialty.
Also, Katie Lynn McClendon, Junior Consumer Buying Dressy; Lisa Greenwood, Junior Consumer Buying Specialty; Monika St. Clair, Junior Consumer Buying Casual; and Varissa Martinez, alternate in the Junior Consumer Buying Casual category.
Other prizes included Julie Kircher, Sub-Junior Construction Cotton Award; Breanne Vaughan, Junior Construction Cotton Award; Bethany Jackson, Sub-Junior Consumer Buying Cotton Award; and Lisa Greenwood, Junior Consumer Buying Cotton Award.
The first place winners will represent Nueces County during the District 11 4-H Fashion Show in May.
Laura Berry receives the Community Builder Award
Laura Berry was recently selected to receive the Community Builder Award from Independence Masonic Lodge No. 1337.
The award recognizes non-Masons who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to community and values consistent with those shared by Masons.
Berry is chairman of the board of Berry Contracting Inc. She is involved in a large number of youth causes, including area livestock shows and sales, Gulf Coast Council of Boy Scouts and area sports teams. She has also served on the Arts Commission for the City of Corpus Christi, the Beautify Corpus Christi Association, the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District school board and Nueces County Extension Advisory board.
Musicians win awards at international competition
Zheng Huang recently won first place in the 2001 Kingsville International Young Performers Competitions.
Huang, a 22-year-old oboist from China, will receive a total of $6,000 and will perform with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra during its 2000-2001 season. He is presently the first chair oboist with the New World Symphony in Miami.
Jonathan Ware, a 16-year-old pianist from Allen, took second place. Ware will receive a total of $4,000.
Third place winners included 17-year-old violinist Eunice Keem, from Northfield, Ill., and 18-year-old violinist Anita Mishoukova, from St. Petersburg, Russia.
James Cho, a 24-year-old pianist from Korea, received honorable mention.
Winners of the Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition included Jonathan Ware, Precollege Piano Solo; and James Cho and 24-year-old pianist Lei Wang, who tied for College Piano Solo.
'Up Syndrome' screening will be held at the art museum
"Up Syndrome" will be screened at 7 p.m. today at the Art Museum of South Texas.
This is the first film of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi graduate Duane Graves. It is a documentary portrait of Graves' boyhood friend, Rene Moreno, who was born with Down Syndrome.
"Up Syndrome" has received recognition at several festivals in Texas, California and Utah, including Slamdance and the Austin Film Festival.
The event is free and open to the public. Both Graves and Moreno will be present for discussion afterwards.

Gospel Music Festival will be held at a Beeville church
A Gospel Music Festival will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Beeville.
The festival will feature Gospel Force, Gospel Truth, Selina Affran, Glenda Smith, Monte Del Olivar Singers and Dancers and the Emmaus Walkers.
There is no entry charge.
Caroll Tigerettes host annual spring show
The annual spring performance of the Caroll High School Tigerettes is tonight in the Selena Auditorium, Bayfront Plaza Convention Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets, $5 each, are available at the box office.
