Javelinas heading to LSC South playoffs as No. 2 seed
Staff and correspondent reports
KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville swept a doubleheader from Tarleton State here Saturday afternoon and with the victories the Javelinas assured themselves of a spot in the four-team Lone Star Conference post-season playoffs April 27-28 in Edmond, Okla.
The top two teams in each the North and South Division will advance into the playoffs, which produce the conference champion. Abilene Christian will be the No. 1 seed from the South and the Javelinas will be No. 2.
TAMUK will meet Central Oklahoma, the No. 1 seed from the North, in an opening round game of the playoffs. The No. 2 seed from the North will be decided next weekend.
The Javelinas won the first game Saturday, 10-3, and took the second, 7-6. TAMUK had won a 1-0 decision Friday night in the opening game of the series.
The Javelinas are 12-9 in the conference standings and at least three games in front of the second place team. The only school with a chance to catch the Javelinas is Eastern New Mexico, and the best the Greyhounds could do is tie. The Javelinas would win the tie-breaker by having won the season series against the Hounds, 4-2.
This was the second consecutive sweep for the Javelinas against an LSC South opponent. The Javs took three games from West Texas A&M last weekend in Canyon.
This will be the Javelinas' first appearance in the LSC playoffs since 1998 when they took the title and advanced into the NCAA Division II national playoffs.
Softball team splits doubleheader with Abilene Christian
Maria Gutierrez pitched a shutout while her teammates collected 10 hits to give Texas A&M-Kingsville a 4-0 victory over Abilene Christian in the second game of a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader in Abilene on Saturday.
ACU had taken the opening game, 3-0.
Gutierrez gave up eight scattered hits in gaining the pitching victory. She had three strikeouts and one walk. Sarah Norman and Amanda Sustaita each had a pair of hits for the Javelinas.
In the opener, Maurine McWilliams threw a one-hitter at the Javelinas. Tracy Guadarrama had the long hit, a single. Amanda Reed was the starting pitcher and worked three innings. She gave up six hits and two earned runs. Gutierrez relieved and allowed one hit and one earned run.
The Javelinas are 28-14 after the weekend action, and the squad is 4-8 in the LSC South Division standings. ACU is 20-16 and 8-4. TAMUK will be in San Antonio Tuesday for a doubleheader with Incarnate Word and will return home for its final three dates of the season. Tarleton State will be in town Friday and Saturday for twinbills, and St. Mary's will be in Kingsville April 24 for the regular-season finale.
