Islanders softball rallies for 6-5 win

A&M-CC claims come-from-behind victroy against St. Edwar's University

From staff and correspondent reports

CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored six unanswered runs en route to posting a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over St. Edwards in the first game of a doubleheader, Saturday afternoon. The Islanders completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the second game.
The Islanders pushed across the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Carey Stanton plated Sarah Mesa with a single to center to complete the comeback. Stanton and Mesa each banged out three hits a piece in the 10-hit attack.
St. Edwards took what appeared to be a comfortable 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. Nicole Lozano plated two of the runs with a single up the middle. Lozano and Ashley Self completed a double steal with Self successfully stealing home. All five of St. Edwards' runs were set up by an error and were unearned.
The Islanders cut the deficit to one with a four-run fifth. Mesa highlighted the frame with a two-run single. A&M-CC tied the game up in the sixth thanks in part to a two out double by Rachel Mendez.
Amanda Burton was credited with the win and improved to 7-14, while Chrissy Hartman suffered the loss and fell to 4-5.
Melanie Drews and Burton combined on a five hitter in the second game.
Drews scattered four hits over five innings to improve to 8-19, while Burton held down the fort with two scoreless innings and picked up her first save of the year. Lozano suffered the loss.
Signings: The Islanders' softball program added collegiate experience Friday after receiving the pledges of a pair of junior college transfers from Eastern Oklahoma State College.
Pitcher Dani Damel and catcher Eden Goss both were signed to national letters of intent, the university announced.
Damel, who will enter A&M-CC as a sophomore, has an 11-7 mark, a 1.00 ERA and 2 saves for Eastern Oklahoma. She has 122 strikeouts in 135 innings, while yielding only 23 walks. She pitched a perfect game earlier this season against Coffeyville College. Goss has played one year for the Lady Mountaineers after transferring from Hill College. In 22 games, she has a .298 batting average.
"I feel like we're one or two players away from being where we want to be, so I'm very excited about getting these two," Islanders coach Natasha Dumoski said. "They add experience and a tough attitude. Dani really helps our pitching staff, and Eden just hits the crud out of the ball."
The addition of Damel will give the Islanders two junior pitchers, Amanda Burton and Melanie Drews, next season. Joining them will be sophomore-to-be Damel and freshman-to-be Sarah Pauley, one of the top high school pitching prospects in Arizona. Pauley signed with the Islanders in the early signing period.
BASEBALL: Chris Goodman and Jason Martinez combined on a three-hitter to pace Arizona to a convincing 13-0 victory over A&M-CC to complete the three-game sweep on Saturday. The game was ended after seven innings due to the run rule.
Goodman pitched five innings, surrendering only one hit en route to upping his mark to 3-1 on the year. Islander starter Carlos Garcia was touched up to the tune of 15 hits and 10 earned runs in five innings. The junior fell to 4-4.
Brad Hassey and Marc Kaiser each tallied three hits a piece in the 17-hit onslaught. Ernie Durazo and Jeff Casper drove in three-runs apiece.
In the second game of the series, A&M-Corpus Christi plated all seven of its runs in the top of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by a three-run shot by Ryan Clyde, his 15th homer of the year. Jimmy Fly added a two-run double to right.
In Thursday's late game, Brian Anderson and Ernie Durazo each had four hits to pace Arizona to a 14-9 victory over the Islanders.
Leading 7-5 in the fifth, the Wildcats put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth and sixth, including a solo home run off Brian Hartung.
TENNIS: A&M-CCCwon five of six singles matches en route to a convincing 6-1 victory over UT-Pan American. The victory stretches its' win streak to nine.
The Islanders, 9-3 on the year, got off to a strong start by sweeping the three doubles matches.
Kelli Kukk defeated Eve Nickelson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2; Feliece Sanchez posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Jessica Brown; Stacey Light defeated Alana Breen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4; Micah De Koning dumped Mireya Villareal 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Denise Amagan won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 over Erica Espinosa.
