Carroll roars past King, 14-16, 15-8, 15-6, to remain undefeated in district
By Matt Young Caller-Times
Carroll volleyball coach Linda Lindsey fears that her team isn't big enough to compete as the Tigers get deeper into the season.
That proved to not be a concern Tuesday.
The Tigers got big performances from a couple of big hitters as Jackie Choi and Rebecca Nycum combined for 28 kills to lead Carroll past King, 14-16, 15-8, 15-6. The win moved Carroll to 2-0 in District 29-5A and 16-7 overall. King dropped to 1-1 in district.
Defense is usually Carroll's secret to success, but Choi and Nycum gave Carroll plenty of offense as well. Nycum finished with a team-high 15 kills, while Choi recorded 13.
"Those are our two players with the big arm swings, so we pretty much have to go with them," Lindsey said. "Our passing wasn't real crisp, so we stuck with a pretty vanilla offense. We just kept getting the ball to Jackie and Rebecca."
Rhea Skrobarczyk led King with seven kills.
"This game shows us some of the little things that we still need to work on," King coach Melinda Horton said. "There was nothing specific, just a lot of little areas that we're going to need to improve on in order to win a match like this."
Despite giving up eight kills to Choi and Nycum in the first game, King still managed to squeak out a 16-14 win. King rallied back from an 11-7 deficit in the opening game by winning seven straight points and holding off Carroll down the stretch. The game, which featured 10 service errors, lasted 40 minutes.
After the opening game, both teams settled down and cut out the service errors.
Down a game, Carroll started quickly in the final two games. The Tigers jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second game before cruising to a 15-8 win. Carroll put King away in the final game, exploding for a 13-4 lead and coasting to the victory.
"I think both teams are very close, and either team could win on any given day," Horton said. "When you get two evenly matched teams, it comes down to who's going to make the errors and who's going to get the digs. Carroll seemed to do that a little better than us this time."
