Stats tell story of Javs' woes
By Javier Becerra Caller-Times
For a program whose history includes 56 winning seasons and seven national championships, the statistics Texas A&M-Kingsville has compiled through its first two games are shocking:
159 yards rushing on 74 attempts, an average of 79.5 yards per game and 2.1 per carry
30 penalties for 224 yards
five of 30 (16.7 percent) on third down conversion attempts
430 pass yards allowed for a Lone Star Conference worst 215 per game
Despite the numbers, nothing is causing more distress in Kingsville than the Javelinas' 0-2 start, the last loss to a team that just two years ago went 0-10.
"Our main concern right now is to win one," said first-year head coach Richard Cundiff, whose Javelinas lost in double overtime, 16-13, to Southwestern Oklahoma last Saturday. "The kids' attitude is still pretty good.
"They would have liked to (have) won this one, but they know it's only been two games. On the game film, they saw where they had some opportunities and didn't take advantage. It eases the pain a little bit. They want to win and they'll keep working."
A&M-Kingsville managed just 171 total yards against Southwestern Oklahoma. With transfer Marc Evans now the chief running back after an injury to Larry Williams, the Javelinas gained 76 yards on 40 rushing plays. Evans had 23 carries for 55 yards, 13 coming on one run. Sophomore Darrell White, who played some last season, finished with five carries for six yards.
"We got hurt late with running backs. There are a couple of kids out academically and some that we recruited in the summer didn't show up," Cundiff said. "With Larry out, we were pressed into playing Darrell, who has not performed anything close to last year, and Evans, who is knew to the program."
Compounding the problem is an out-of-sync offensive line missing two starters. Cundiff said tackle Walter Wigfall (6-foot-6, 360 pounds) is due back within the next two weeks after injuring his arm in a car accident in May. Guard Bryan Guillory (6-2, 270), who tore his quadriceps during the summer, is be out for the season.
"If anybody follows the program, they knew coming into it the line wasn't going be like it was in the past," Cundiff said. "We had to play some young and inexperienced kids. There's nothing wrong with (tackle) Jeff Chase and (center Robert) Garza, but the other three spots are really in question."
With LSC tri-champion Southeastern Oklahoma State (0-2) next on the schedule for the Javelinas, Cundiff said it will be business as usual during practice.
"We'll just continue to try to get better," he said. "We know who we have to play with. The inexperience and young doesn't matter. We have to get better each week."
