IceRays sign two players
Carey, Brown join Corpus Christi team
From staff and correspondent reports
The Corpus Christi IceRays signed Jason Carey Friday after receiving the rights to the all-star goaltender from a May 19 trade with Central Texas.
Last season, Carey helped the Stampede to the Governor's Cup for the best regular season record with a mark of 24-9-0. He finished the season with a 2.88 goals against average, sixth best in the Western Professional Hockey League.
"The addition of Jason gives us two solid goaltenders for this season," IceRays head coach Taylor Hall said. "Any time you can get a player the caliber of Carey, it can only make your team better."
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Carey played one year for Saginaw of the Continental Hockey League and El Paso of the WPHL before spending the last two seasons with Central Texas.
Including Carey, the IceRays now have four goaltenders signed. Earlier in the offseason, the IceRays signed last season regular Eddie Skazyk, along with rookies Mike Szodzinski and Matt Wealick.
A ICERAYS SIGN OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMEN: The IceRays added defensemen Scott Brown, a 35-year-old veteran who has played his entire career in Europe, most recently with the Fife Flyers.
"Brown is a good defensemen that can make things happen offensively," Hall said. "Steve should fit right into our game plan, and his experience will help with our younger guys."
Brown's most productive season was the 1993-94 campaign with the Whitley Warriors, when he finished with 148 points (71 goals, 77 assists).
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native played for the University of Manitoba and last played in North America in 1995 with the roller team Vancouver Voodoo.
Brown will join the IceRays in late September for the start of training camp.
A FORMER ICERAYS HEADING TO AUSTRIA:
Former IceRays defensemen Bobby Quinell signed to play the 2000-01 season with the Graz Ninty-Niners of the Austrian Elite League.
"This is a great opportunity for Bobby," Hall said. "With his abilities, I am confident that he will do great things in Austria."
Quinell played two seasons for the IceRays. In 1998-99 he played in 62 games and finished with 41 points on 10 goals and 31 assists. Last season, Quinell appeared scored 12 goals and recorded 47 assists in 47 games to finish with 59 points.
