IceRays beat Ice Pirates, 4-2, in fourth road game

By Nick Walsh
American Press

The Corpus Christi IceRays scored three power-play goals and skated away with a 4-2 victory Saturday over the Lake Charles Ice Pirates.
But it was Jeff Paluseo's even-strength goal at 14:38 of the second period that was the difference.
The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the IceRays (3-4-1), who played their fourth game in as many days.
And they did it shorthanded, skating with 14 players. Among the missing was leading scorer Kurt Wickenheiser who was serving the last of a league-imposed two-game suspension.
"We've been struggling as of late," said IceRays coach Taylor Hall. "We probably played the strongest of our four (games) tonight. It looked like we really wanted to win out there."
For the Ice Pirates (2-6), it was a different team than the one that won in Austin Friday night.
"We made things difficult four ourselves," said Ice Pirates coach Bob Mantha. "We talked about a team that's playing four games in four days. We talked about a team playing with 14 players and two goaltenders. We talked about the things that we shouldn't do, and in turn we tried to do too much too often at home.
"The way we played tonight was a total different game than we played (Friday) in Austin.
Shawn Frappier gave the IceRays a 1-0 lead on the power play at 8:10 of the first period with a shot from the blue line that beat Ice Pirates goalie Nolan McDonald.
Clint Wensley, playing his second game since returning from the 14-day injured reserve list, answered with a power-play goal for the Ice Pirates at 13:53. It was his third goal in two games.
Three minutes prior to his goal, Wensley was denied on a breakaway by IceRays goalie Jason Carey. Thirty seconds after that stop, the Ice Pirates missed on a 2-on-1 rush as John Hanson fired high and wide on Carey.
Defenseman Scott Orzoff gave the Ice Pirates their only lead, 2-1, 32 seconds into the second period for his first goal of the season. Orzoff carried the puck on the right side across the IceRays' blue line and charged for the net and flipped a backhander over Carey.
"I stepped up in the breakout," Orzoff said. "I got a good pass from Scott Wray and came across the red line. I saw the defenseman had his body turned the wrong way and went around him.
"For once in my life I had in my had what I wanted to do - fake a shot and go backhand, and it worked."
Using the power play again, Cory Evans scored his first goal of the season at 10:59 as the IceRays tied the score at 2-2.
