Jamie Lashua, a Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar from Flour Bluff High School, is shown with some of her favorite books. She loves to read, besides being a prolific writer.
When Jamie Lashua picks up a newspaper or magazine, she does not just read it, she dreams of seeing her name on the front page.
"I chose to do newspaper instead of yearbook because I would get to see my byline. I like to see results," Jamie, 17, said. "To know that people read it, that I got my point across is great."
The Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar in communication ranks 18th out of 357 in her class at Flour Bluff High School with a 91.69 grade average, or 98.05 with honors classes factored in.
"I have always liked creative writing, but I didn't think of published writing until my eighth-grade English teacher suggested it," Jamie said. "Then, I just got hooked."
Jamie says writing means that she is able to communicate with imagery, has a creative outlet and is able tell other people's life stories.
Jamie was page editor during her sophomore and junior years for The Waldron Street Journal, the Flour Bluff High School newspaper, is editor-in-chief this year and took first place at the University Interscholastic League last year in news writing. She is also this year's National Honor Society president, a member of the band and color guard, and was last year's student council president. She says the reason she stays so involved is because she enjoys what she is doing.
"Everything I do, from the newspaper to the clubs to the band, whatever it is - I do it because I love it," Jamie said. "It makes me happy to be active. I cannot stand to just sit around without anything to do."
Journalism teacher Kim Knief says Jamie is very self-motivated.
"I really don't have to do anything at all," Knief said. "She runs the staff through brainstorming drills, makes sure they turn their stories in on time, works very hard and means business. The staff really respects her but also has fun with her." Jamie's literary interests don't end at writing. She also is a voracious reader. Her passion for books stems from the time her mother would spend reading to her and her sisters. "I used to start at one side of the bookshelf and read all the way through to the other side," Jamie said. "My mom used to always try and get us to pick up a book. I think it just carried over."
Jamie attributes her writing and creative ability to her parents, Ernie and Billie Lashua. "She has always been very creative and marched to a different drummer," Jamie's mother, Billie Lashua, said.
