| Theresa Guajardo is a senior at George West High School. She has been named a Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar for spirit. She volunteers for the Boys & Girls Club and coaches Little Olympics. |
Theresa Guajardo once was so shy she didn't want to read in front of the class, but now she doesn't hesitate in yelling in front of a whole stadium.
Theresa, head cheerleader at George West High School, is a far cry from the shy seventh-grader who felt pressure that every word she uttered in class had to be right.
"(Cheerleading) gives me more responsibility and puts more weight on my shoulder," Theresa said. "It makes me feel that I can accomplish things and not get stressed out about it."
Theresa, 17, a senior, says cheerleading also has given her opportunities to serve her school and community in ways such as performing cheerleading routines at nursing homes.
This Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar in spirit ranks seventh in her class of 86 at George West High School with a 90.97 grade average or 96.24 with honors classes factored in.
She's a member of the National Honor Society, was selected Miss Live Oak County 2000, and has been on the A/B Honor roll for three years. She is active in her church's youth organization and volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club. She has also been a coach for Little Olympics, instilling in third-graders a spirit to compete.
"She has that leadership quality that is unbelievable and she is a take-charge kind of girl," said Dee Cathey, cheerleader sponsor. "She is instrumental in keeping the group together as a team."
Theresa keeps the cheerleading squad organized in weekly practices, sign painting and other activities, Cathey said.
During the summer, Theresa was named to the all-star squad of the Universal Cheerleading Association camp in George West, Cathey said.
Theresa, daughter of Rosa and Adolio Guajardo, is the oldest of four children and has always been a perfectionist, even if her main goal is not to win a competition.
When she competed for the title of Live Oak County Queen earlier this year, she did it more to have fun, her mother said.
"She tries her best at everything she does," Rosa Guajardo said. "She had her best friends in the contest and she was more like 'if she beats me out that's OK.'"
But when the winner was announced Theresa, of course, was happy to have won, her mother said.
"She is a perfectionist and everything needs to be in order," her mother said.
