Jamie Ahrens is a senior at Academy High School in Kingsville. She has been named a Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar for spirit. Ahrens is president of her class and organizes spirit-boosting activities at her school.
Academy High School in Kingsville doesn't have a cheerleading squad but that hasn't stopped Jamie Ahrens from organizing pep rallies, award ceremonies and mini-parades to get her fellow students in the mood for competition.
"Since we have such a small school we don't have cheerleaders or a spirit squad," the 18-year-old senior said. "There would be no motivation."
Jamie, daughter of James and Maribeth Ahrens, has been named a Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar in spirit and is ranked fifth in her class of 32. Jamie has a 4.19 grade point average out of a possible 5.0.
"We don't have cheerleaders that are elected to a position and Jamie stands out because she has taken on that responsibility," said Marylee Crane, University Interscholastic League academic coordinator and teacher. "She's like a little light bulb, she's got this great spark."
Crane said there are students who have leadership skills or intelligence or spirit or charisma, but Jamie is a combination of all those things.
"She looks and sees what needs to be done and she does it," she said. "A lot of students sort of walk through school without really looking, Jamie isn't like that."
Jamie enjoys being vice president of the school's National Honor Society and president of her class and has won numerous awards in University Interscholastic League competitions such as one-act play, headline writing, group improvisation and golf.
Jamie, who wants to attend Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos before maybe transferring to the University of Texas, said she plans to major in mass communications. She is considering a career in advertising because it encompasses several things that she enjoys: writing, filming and being creative.
Jamie's mother, Maribeth Ahrens, said she always has told Jamie that it's possible to work and enjoy herself. And she does.
"She pretty independent, in that when she wants to do something in school she pretty much goes at it," her mother said. "If they have a choice of different things, projects, she may pick a harder project if it's something she enjoys doing."
