Jury indicts man turned away by jail officials
A grand jury on Thursday indicted a man on a sexual assault charge - one week after he was arrested but turned away by Nueces County Jail officials because of a medical condition, prosecutors said.
William Holly, 58, of Corpus Christi, was indicted on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child in connection with the same incident in which he was arrested last week.
He was not in custody at the county jail Thursday evening.
Holly was arrested Oct. 19 on a warrant and taken to the jail. Corpus Christi Police Officer Richard Maxwell, who arrested Holly, said jail medical personnel told him he would have to take Holly to a hospital for clearance before the jail would accept him.
Maxwell said that, in releasing Holly, he followed instructions he had been given before the arrest by superiors who believed there was nothing an emergency room could do to make Holly fit for jail.
Police investigators knew before Holly was arrested that he had undergone several heart surgeries and had high blood pressure and diabetes.
Sheriff Larry Olivarez said Holly complained of chest pains, had a high heart rate, was sweating profusely and had elevated blood sugar levels. Olivarez said the jail cannot accept such a medically unstable prisoner and must have a medical clearance.

Small grass fire spreads quickly near Citgo unit
A grass fire off of Interstate 37 and Corn Products Road took firefighters an hour to control Thursday afternoon, Channel 6 News reported.
Fire officials said that about 4 p.m. crews responded to the small grass fire and found it spreading toward Citgo's tanker storage farm.
Three units from Annaville along with six from the Corpus Christi Fire Department fought the fire for about an hour before getting it under control, Channel 6 reported.
No one was hurt and property damage was minor.
