Man shot in scuffle with cop
San Diego incident being investigated
By Sara Lee Fernandez Caller-Times
SAN DIEGO - A 31-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday night after being shot by a police officer during an incident in San Diego.
According to Texas Ranger Ray Ramon, Rogelio "Rocky" Lichtenberger was shot once in the chest area Saturday afternoon during a scuffle with a 23-year-old police officer whose name was not released. Lichtenberger was taken by HALO-Flight to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial where he was listed in critical but stable condition, a hospital official said.
Ramon said police were called to a disturbance in the 400 block of Nickenson Street in San Diego around 4 p.m. Saturday. Ramon would not describe the nature of the disturbance.
The officer was injured in the scuffle, and was taken to Alice Regional Hospital where he was treated for minor scrapes and released.
Ramon said police are still trying to determine how the scuffle began.
"When the officer got there he came in contact with Rogelio Lichtenberger and there was an altercation," Ramon said. "We are still in the process of investigating how the altercation started.''
Witnesses said they heard Lichtenberger yelling "take the car. I don't want to go to jail."
Witnesses also said they saw the officer chase Lichtenberger before catching up to him two houses down from where the incident began.
Irene Perez, Lichtenberger's cousin, said several children saw the altercation and started yelling, which brought adults outside. She said Lichtenberger has had confrontations with police in the past.
"I think it could have been prevented," said Perez, who saw the shooting. "They've had trouble with (Lichtenberger) before. I think they could have handled it differently."
The police officer will be suspended with pay until the completion of the investigation, Ramon said.
