Writers honored for story on treatment for indigent
Mental Health Association praises Copp, Hill for article published in February in Caller-Times
The Mental Health Association in Texas honored two Caller-Times staff writers this week for their coverage of mental illness issues in Corpus Christi.
Tara Copp and Tamara Hill received a Mental Health Association in Texas Media Award for their story, "Psych Future Clouded." The award was presented during a luncheon Friday in Austin.
The story, published in February, detailed the problems created when the community was left with only one inpatient mental health treatment facility after the closure of Charter Behavioral Health System of Corpus Christi.
In particular, the story highlighted the struggle indigent patients faced in getting treatment.
"The serious issue of insufficient resources in communities is being felt across the state, leaving too many families struggling to piece together care," the association said in presenting the award.
Copp covered business for the Caller-Times before becoming the Texas correspondent for the Scripps Howard Washington Bureau in July. Hill covers health for the Caller-Times.
