IceRays pick up their first loss of the season in 4-3 loss

From staff reports

The Corpus Christi IceRays lost, but still won.
The IceRays suffered their first loss of the season Friday night - a 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the previously winless El Paso Buzzards - but still managed to do themselves some good in the Eastern Division standings of the Western Professional Hockey League.
That's because Bossier-Shreveport (3-1-0) lost to Austin. Coupled with the one point the IceRays received Friday, that puts Corpus Christi (3-0-1) in sole possession of first place as it heads to the road tonight against Central Texas.
Not that that softened the loss much for IceRays coach Taylor Hall.
"We've got a team that's capable of going some places. Tonight, we played like individuals," Hall said. "But it's difficult to learn a lesson when you're winning hockey games. Now we've learned the hard way. The guys aren't quite as excited in the locker room after a shootout loss than they are after a victory."
The IceRays were extended to an overtime for the second consecutive game. But goaltender Jason Carey could not duplicate his overtime hot hand in the net.
Carey, who had stopped five of six Central Texas shootout shots in Wednesday night's victory, gave up the winning goal on El Paso's fifth shot Friday night. He stopped Brent Scott's blast, but the puck trickled under him and just into the net.
The IceRays outshot the Buzzards during regulation, 37-32. Geoff Bumstead's goal off an assist by Kurt Wickenheiser with 59 seconds left in the second period game the IceRays momentum and a 3-2 lead going into the final period.
But the Buzzards tied the game 7:15 into the final period on Eric Montreuil's fourth goal of the season.
In the shootout, the IceRays took a quick 1-0 lead on a shot to the right past El Paso goaltender Jeff Levy off the stick of Gatis Tseplis. But the IceRays couldn't hold the lead. Carey came out to challenge Patrick Charbonneau on the ensuing Buzzards' shot, and Charbonneau flicked in the shot over the top shelf to even the shootout at 1-1.
Levy then saved a shot from Alex Kholomeyev, and the IceRays fell down 2-1 when Van Burgess scored past Carey. Wickenheiser's tying effort was saved off the tip of the glove of Levy, which then set up Scott's game winner.
