IceRays win 4-0 over Ice Pirates

By Andrea Wall
Caller-Times

To say that last night's game was physical would be an understatement.
The IceRays improved to 2-0-0 with an aggressive 4-0 win Saturday night over the Lake Charles Ice Pirates at Memorial Coliseum.
With a combined 26 penalties in the game and a lot of body checking, it was apparent both teams were seeing red.
"Because we have a small rink and big, physical players, we like to play very aggressively," IceRays head coach Taylor Hall said. "It will take an offensive team like we played tonight out of the game."
Kurt Wickenheiser's second goal of the season gave the IceRays momentum and an early lead. His short goal with 12:39 in the first period came on a 5-4 power play, with assists from Geoff Bumstead and Jody Praznik.
"I just try to concentrate on getting open and wait for Bummer (Bumstead) to give me a great pass," Wickenheiser said. "He always comes through."
A little over three minutes into the second period, the IceRays once again took advantage of a power play opportunity. Alex Kholomeyev took a long shot off passes from Bumstead and Wickenheiser and found the top shelf of the net to take a 2-0 lead.
With only one defender and plenty of open ice in front of him, Jaime Hearn let a strong shot go from deep for his second goal of the season and a 3-0 lead going into the final period.
The Ice Pirates had a 5-3 power play advantage midway through the third, but tough IceRays defense kept them scoreless. Matt Van Horlick scored the IceRays fourth and final goal of the game with an assist from Dustin McArthur.
After a strong performance from newly-acquired goalkeeper Jason Carey in Thursday night's season opener against Fort Worth, goalie Eddy Skazyk continued the tough play at the net for the IceRays. Chants of "Eddy, Eddy" broke out from the crowd several times during the game.
Skazyk stopped 11 Lake Charles power plays and 30 shots on goal in the shutout.
"The team defense was very good tonight," Skazyk said. "They made it easy for me."
