Children's choir to be featured at Catholic Charities fund-raiser on Tuesday
By Stephanie L. Jordan Caller-Times
For 35 years those who have needed help fast have gone to Catholic Charities.
And their age, religion or race hasn't made a difference. Annually, more than 16,000 people in need have gotten help from the non-profit organization that helps people regardless of religious affiliation.
Lillian Mentz remembers the woman who needed to have her electricity turned on so she could move into a new home.
There was the homeless man who needed medication for gangrene.
And the child whose parent needed help paying for a week's worth of antibiotics.
Sometimes it only takes $10 to make a sick child well again, but those few dollars can make a real difference, said Mentz, director of emergency aid for Catholic Charities.
"At least we were able to keep them in medication until they could get help otherwise," Mentz said. "Sometimes it's all they need until they get their next paycheck or their next Social Security check."
On Tuesday, Catholic Charities officials hope that the community will help them help others by attending a 7 p.m. benefit at the Port of Corpus Christi's Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center.
Bishop Edmond Carmody will host the event, which honors the 35th birthday of the organization and will feature the Corpus Christi Cathedral Children's Choir.
Tickets are $100 per person and table prices range from $1,000 to $10,000.
Catholic Charities administers emergency financial aid, counseling services and immigration processing to a 12-county area.
"This organization helps individuals who would otherwise fall through the cracks," said Ticia Hanisch, one of the coordinators of the event. "So far we have raised over $100,000 and people have been so generous. People have just been so receptive to helping those in need."
Issues handled by Catholic Charities include poverty, homelessness, immigration requirements, marital and family problems, drug and sex abuse counseling, and aid for food, rent, utilities and medical needs.
