Juston Cardwell (left) scored for the Fort Worth Brahmas after faking out Corpus Christi netminder Jason Carey (second from left), giving Fort Worth a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Before the start of their third season, the Corpus Christi IceRays talked big about putting together their best season yet after adding several key defensive players in the offseason. In the season-opener, the IceRays showed they have good reason to talk big.
Corpus Christi's defense stoned Fort Worth en route to a 3-1 win Thursday at Memorial Coliseum. The defense was led by the biggest offseason acquistion Jason Carey, who finished with 31 saves. Carey, who was an all-star for Central Texas last season, thrilled the crowd with several saves that left him sprawled all over the ice. Carey did all this after surviving a scary moment midway through the second period. Fort Worth's Mike Tilson blindsided Carey, leaving the IceRays goalie laying motionless in the Corpus Christi net. Carey got back on his skates after a few minutes, complained of dizziness, but remained in the game. Carey didn't allow a goal after the vicious hit.
The only goal Carey allowed came courtesy of a five-on-three power play in the first period. Carey blocked an array of shots during the power play, but when he deflected Rob Milliken's shot, Justin Cardwell was there for the rebound and went top shelf to give Fort Worth a 1-0 lead.
On offense, the IceRays found success with the usual suspects. Geoff Bumstead, last year's WPHL leading scorer, got the game-winning goal on a rebound with 47 seconds left in the second period. Kurt Wickenheiser, who led the league in goals last season, scored the IceRays first goal of the game.
Corpus Christi got a break on the goal, when the puck got sent down the ice at the same time Dustin McArthur was sprinting out of the penalty box. McArthur's exit from the box created a breakaway opportunity, which he converted when he dished the puck to Wickenheiser, who deposited it in the net with 12:21 left in the second period.
The IceRays took advantage of a power play for an insurance goal early in the third period. Just six seconds after Fort Worth's Sean Brady was sent to the penalty box for tripping, Jamie Hearn's slap shot found the back of the net for a 3-1 IceRays lead.
Bumstead was back to his bruising ways in the season opener. Bumstead, known for his physical play, sent three Fort Worth players sprawling with hits in the open ice. He also battered Fort Worth's Daniel Villanueve in a fight in the third period. Bumstead finished the fight with a left cross that sent Villanueve down to the ice.
