IceRays again silence Wichita Thunder, 6-0
Hall lauds his team's improved play in Corpus Christi's second preseason triumph
By Andrea Wall Caller-Times
The IceRays, just seven days away from their season opener, looked to be in regular-season form Friday night, smoking the Wichita Thunder, 6-0, at Memorial Coliseum.
It was the second victory over the Thunder in three nights, and the IceRays moved to a perfect 2-0 record in the preseason. They open the regular WPHL season Thursday at home against the Fort Worth Brahmas.
The IceRays, who captured the Caller-Times Best of the Best of the Best Tournament for the second straight year, outscored the Thunder 16-4 over the two games.
"I think both teams played better tonight," Hall said. "It looked a lot more like a regular season game than Wednesday did and our goalies looked really good."
Only three minutes into the first period, Gatis Tseplis got things started for the IceRays with a goal off a pass from Alex Kholomeyev. With Wichita playing much tighter defense than Wednesday, all of the IceRays' goals came against evenly matched defenses.
The IceRays were unable to convert any of their eight power play opportunities.
Three second-period goals, two by Dennis Shiryaev and another by Kholomeyev, gave the IceRays a 4-0 lead going into the final period.
"I think Wichita looked a little slow on the ice tonight," Shiryaev said. "I think we looked pretty good. But then again, we were a little rusty, too."
With 15:37 left in the last period, Steve Smilie found Yannick Latour's missed shot and was able to convert for an easy goal. Almost 30 seconds later, Smilie scored again off assists from Bill Monkman and Mario Dumoulin, to take a final 6-0 lead.
Corpus Christi's goalies played a flawless game. Jason Carey stopped three Thunder power plays and made 12 saves. Matt Wealick, who came in for Carey midway through the second period, finished with 14 saves.
